Chicks on Speed has evolved from the founding trio to become a collective of seven members who get together as needed for their projects. CHICKS ON SPEED HAPPENING DJ in Montreal offers a duo format in line with their album The Beat is Happening, now in full creation mode. Chicks on Speed are experimenting, this time, with their future music output, to be released free online, on the first day of every month, from the 1st on April onwards, as an Open Source / Copy Left project. The album is produced by Phil Speiser aka Dirty Disco Youth, with invited artists for each remix, in different stopovers : Africa in July, Sao Paulo in August….
All songs will be given away over www.chicksonspeed.com and special selected blogs such as http://fairtilizer.com/track/chicksonspeed/thebeatishappening, giving fans and artists the opportunity to download stems, create and post their remixes, opening up the Chicks creative process, to greater discourse and further creative development.
The album should be completed in September 2010.
The trademark of this multidisciplinary group stands out as the artists blurr the boundaries between contemporary art, music, fashion, and performance. Live instruments, home-made costumes, video creation, DJ sets… The girls create their very own punk universe. Their music is impossible to classify, as it evolves somewhere between electro, rock and new wave. Their delivery is inventive and explosive, resting on a synthetic frame and reviving sounds from the eighties. Their electropunk sound flirts with machines and collages, all backed by imagery. They even go so far as to take on a few songs by the B52's, venting intensive hyperactivity on stage, complete with extravagant stage direction and costume designs (which they create themselves), muddled make-up, and music that really comes on strong.
Their stage performance reflects this creative energy. Alternately musicians, actrices or expressionistic dancers, the Chicks on Speed like to intermix their roles. A unique opportunity to discover them, or to see them again.
ORGAN MOOD
This happening of musical and visual improvisation in time is an immersion through a series of hypnotic rythms, melodies, motifs and projections by Mathieu Jacques and Christophe Lamarche.
