SHAMBHALA MUSIC FESTIVAL
VALHALLA SOUND CIRCUS
Imagine the passion and virtuosity of Snarky Puppy, the killer band rising quickly in the jazz ranks. Then imagine the celebratory spirit and fiery rhythms of world music. Now imagine the joined forces of Snarky Puppy’s bassist/leader and Guadeloupe-born Montreal singer Malika Tirolien. Imagine Bokanté, in a packed Club Soda for one hot summer evening. It’s a Festival dream come true!
Victor Solf, born in Germany, spent his childhood in Kraftwerk and Can; Simon Carpentier, in exile in the States as a teenager, was imprinted by the roots of Black Music. The duet’s sensual pop embodies a powerful concept of love and erotism, and the emanating sensuality and strength therein. Live performances being inherent to their artistic proposal, they must be seen live, surrounded by their 3 exceptional musicians.
Discovered by Prince online, who then invited her to join him in concert for the 30th anniversary of Purple Rain, then signed by legendary label Blue Note, this singer-pianist with the wild mane has perfectly integrated the essence of the great jazz divas into a sound all her own. This new soul voice from Tennessee lands with her first album, Soul Eyes.
Raised on gospel, soul and R&B from an early age, Cory Henry has grown into a high-voltage keyboardist who delivers an incredibly groovy no-holds-barred jazz-funk. After presenting us with The Revival last summer, he returns to dazzle us anew with his astonishing pianistic prowess.
At just 22, British prodigy Jacob Collier has already opened shows for Hancock and Corea, joined the great Quincy Jones’ stable and won two Grammys. A brilliant singer, arranger, composer and multi-instrumentalist, he handled every step in the production of My Room (2016), his debut, which he’ll present here in a unique show, with technology at the service of his impressive virtuosity.
Adored by Paul McCartney, Chris Martin, Feist and Elvis Costello, covered by Diana Krall and Rod Stewart, this supremely talented Canadian singer just released a 15th album, The Last Rider. Enjoy a collection of originals largely influenced by the British Invasion, combining silky pop rock, folk and country, beautifully enhance by his distinctive, iconic voice.
Legendary ’80s New Wave outfit, formed in the crucible of the Montreal punk scene, the Men are back with their synths, electro savvy and the incomparable baritone of leader Ivan Doroschuk. Welcome back Canada’s electropop pioneers, with THE global hit of 1983, Safety Dance, and much, much more!
The Festival is proud to present UK Marathon, a special event assembling the finest from the exciting English jazz scene! Welcome Binker and Moses, a superb semi-free-jazz sax’n’drums duo whose powerhouse live sets send fans into orbit; and Portico Quartet, an intelligent blend of contemporary jazz, electronica and world—ethereal, trippy and groovy!
Making her Festival debut with her 3rd album, Sonho Real, Flavia transports us to a shimmering Brazil somewhere between the roots sound of the Nordeste and the baile funk of Rio, with accents of forro and ragga, frenzied ska and hip-hop rhythms and the nonchalance of dub reggae. It’s a purely incandescent sound fusing poetic, committed lyrics and sunny melodies.
Somewhere between funk, jazz and hip-hop, this French outfit of five mustachioed musicians and singer LiliBoy deliver deeply groovy compositions in the tradition of their Marseille mentor, Chinese Man. With zany circus costumes, engaging choreography, unique staging, saucy vocals and… mustaches, they’re an utterly distinctive outfit with the seductive French je ne sais quoi. And yes, mustaches! Sexy.
Music critics can’t stop heaping praise on SOMI, whom some have compared to a young Nina Simone. Her magnificent voice, her unique fusion of African and jazz influences, her effortless elegance, and her social conscience—reflected in many of her artistic choices—place her in a class apart. She’ll present her latest album, Petite Afrique: The Other Black in Harlem (2017).
Straight out of the Paris nightclub scene where they held court as DJs, Hervé Carvalho and Guido Minisky embody the powerful thrills of contemporary exotic electronica. Devoted fans of ’80s Detroit house, techno and all the sounds of the Mediterranean basin, Acid Arab weave a mind-blowing, exhilarating technofied Eastern fusion. Do not under any circumstances miss this phenomenon.
